Foreword by Editor-in-Chief 序言

Water, the source of life, is indispensable in human production and life. With the rapid social and economic development, water pollution has become an increasingly serious global problem in recent years. Since the quality of water resource directly affects the resident health and national economic development, it is urgent to prevent and control water pollution. Water pollution management is an important part in ecological civilization in China, which has achieved great success over the past 40 years of reform and opening up.

Since 2014, the core journals in environmental research, such as Environmental Science and China Environmental Science, have been selected for the Journal Translation Project (JTP, http://jtp.cnki.net/bilingual). As of 2020, 1 600 articles from these journals have been included in JTP and published in both Chinese and English, which have comprehensively demonstrated the main progress in water pollution prevention and control in China and enhanced the international influence and popularity of these journals. To further promote the international exchange of academic achievements in water pollution research in China and the internationalization of these Chinese journals, China National Knowledge Infrastructure selects 76 excellent articles which involve the latest findings in water pollution in China. These studies are supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National High-tech R&D Program of China and National Science and Technology Major Project of China for Water Pollution Control and Management. This book includes two chapters. Chapter 1 includes the articles focusing on the distribution characteristics, sources and ecological risks of heavy metals, organochlorines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, antibiotics and nutrients in key basins such as the Yangtze River Basin, the Yellow River Basin, and the Taihu Lake Basin in China. Chapter 2 mainly involves the techniques and measures used to control water pollution in China. The book fully demonstrates the achievements of water pollution prevention and control in China and offers a reference for water pollution management all over the world, which has important academic value and practical significance. The original articles were published in Chinese and this book is a compilation of English version of the selected articles. This book can be used as a reference for teachers and students, researchers, engineers, technicians and officials focusing on environmental protection. Meanwhile, it provides a Chinese model of water pollution management for the world.

The prevention and control of water pollution still have a long way to go and necessitate the unveiling of pollution mechanisms and the scientific and technological innovations. China will endeavor to win the battle for protecting clean water and join the international community to confront the serious challenge of water pollution. As the editor-in-chief, I believe this book will provide new ideas and methods for global management of water pollution, which is of both theoretical and practical significance.
