Tumor has become a serious health concern worldwide since its identification. Therapeutic approaches in tumor treatment for centuries emerge in endlessly, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies, bringing hope to numerous tumor patients. However, after more than two centuries of combatting tumor, the inevitable metastasis and drug resistance, the cachexia, and multiple invasive complications together make tumor an incurable disease. With the gradual acknowledgement and recognition of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) internationally, the outstanding performance of TCM in the field of resisting cancer has attracted attention worldwide. More and more clinicians and researchers have devoted to the research on the anti-tumor effects of TCM globally. The discovery of a variety of Chinese medicinal materials with anti-tumor activity and studies on the effective therapeutic approaches of TCM including acupuncture and moxibustion provide favorable “arsenal” in the battle against tumor. TCM is exerting the roles in countries around the world to actively complement and cooperate with western medicine, and has become an increasingly recognized approach in the field of tumor treatment in recent years.
Since 2014, journals, including Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Acupuncture Research, Chinese Journal of Chinese Materia Medica, Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, Chinese Archives of Traditional Chinese Medicine, World Chinese Medicine, Liaoning Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica, Chinese Traditional and Herbal Drugs, The Chinese Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, China Pharmacological Bulletin, Chinese Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Chinese Pharmaceutical Journal, Journal of Chinese Medicinal Materials, and Chinese Journal of Nursing, have successively joined the Journal Translation Project (JTP, http://jtp.cnki.net/bilingual). By 2020, 4 522 articles from these journals have been selected into JTP and published in both Chinese and English, which enhances the international influence of these journals. To further strengthen the cultural diffusion of TCM, ever-increase the international influence of these TCM journals, and make the research progress of TCM in cancer treatment accessible to more readers, CNKI and the editorial offices of the journals organized experts to choose outstanding ones from the selected articles in JTP, and selected 134 research articles on tumor treatment using TCM approaches. These articles were included into Tumor (TCM) (English edition), one book in China’s Medicine Progress Series (English edition). All the articles included are recommended by the editorial offices of the journals for the first publication. The book contains sections of Anti-tumor Advances in TCM, Analysis of Effective Components, Respiratory System Tumor, Urogenital Tumor, and Digestive System Tumor, with mechanism explanation and clinical research involved. Supported by scientific methodology, it fully demonstrates the unique approaches and excellent therapeutic effects of TCM, with objective findings concluded. This book is a compilation of the English version of the articles originally published in Chinese.
As the editor-in-chief of this book, I hope this book, rich in effective experience and therapeutic approaches of TCM, can be taken as a scientific and practical reference in the treatment of tumor worldwide for medical staff as well as those engaged in the TCM work around the world, to further enhance the international influence of TCM journals and contribute to the spreading of TCM culture.
