Tumor has long been a global challenge. In the past over 200 years, treatment methods for tumor have been emerging, such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy, bringing hopes to tumor patients while inducing metastasis and drug resistance. Consumption by cachexia and various complications make tumor insuperable. Current available tumor treatment methods in western medicine are surgery, radiotherapy, biotherapy (including hormone therapy, cell immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and vaccine therapy), gene therapy, and chemotherapy, and more methods are being constantly innovated. Targeted therapy and photodynamic therapy have been applied in clinical practice. Despite the rapid advancement of modern technology and medical care, the antitumor mechanisms of many drugs remain unclear and new drugs are yet to be explored. In recent years, researchers in China have actively developed antitumor drugs, optimized the chemical structures of related drugs, elucidated antitumor mechanisms of them, and improved the nursing of tumor patients, making great contributions to the treatment and recovery of tumor patients.
Since 2014, Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica, The Chinese Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Chinese Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Chinese Journal of Clinical Oncology, Chinese Pharmacological Bulletin, Chinese Pharmaceutical Journal, Chinese Journal of Nursing, and Chinese Journal of Biotechnology have been selected for Journal Translation Project (JTP, http://jtp.cnki.net/bilingual). As of 2020, 1 908 articles from these journals have been included in the platform and published in Chinese and English, which has enhanced the international influence of these journals. To further promote the international dissemination of these journals and to inform more readers about the latest progress in tumor treatment with western medicine in China, China National Knowledge Infrastructure collaborated with the editorial offices of these journals to constitute a panel of experts and select 107 excellent articles on tumor treatment with western medicine. The English versions of these articles were compiled into the book Tumor (Western Medicine) as part of China’s Medicine Progress Series. These articles were recommended by the editorial boards of the journals in which they were originally published in Chinese, covering comprehensive drug research, hematopoietic organ and lymphoid tumors, respiratory system tumor, nursing research, urogenital tumor, skin tumor, neurological tumor, and digestive system tumor. These articles fully demonstrate the cutting-edge advances in tumor treatment in China, with scientific methodological support and objective conclusions. The original articles were published in Chinese, and this book is a compilation of English version of selected articles.
As the editor-in-chief, I believe this book will provide experience and methods from the Chinese medicinal community for tumor treatment worldwide. This is of scientific value and practical significance for global medical professionals.
