Foreword by Editor-in-Chief 序言

Since the shale gas revolution in the United States, the major oil-producing countries have strengthened the exploration of shale oil/gas, continuously promoting the development of shale oil/gas industry. As the important unconventional hydrocarbon resource, shale oil/gas is of huge economic and social value. China is highly dependent on foreign energy and has a large gap in the demand and supply of shale gas. Nevertheless, China has an abundance of shale gas resources and national policies continuously support shale oil/gas development, which lay a solid foundation for shale oil/gas exploration in China. The scientific research and field practice in recent years have achieved great progress in shale oil/gas exploration technologies in China, with shale gas demonstration zones being established in Fuling and Changning-Weiyuan. China has become one of the few countries to realize the commercial development of shale gas, which provides a reference for shale oil/gas development in other countries.

Since 2014, the core journals of oil/gas such as Petroleum Drilling Techniques and China Petroleum Exploration have been selected for the Journal Translation Project (JTP, http://jtp.cnki.net/bilingual). As of 2020, 333 excellent articles from these journals have been included in this platform and published in Chinese and English to comprehensively demonstrate the main progress of shale oil/gas exploration technologies in China, which has enhanced the international influence and popularity of these journals. To further promote the international exchange of academic achievements in oil/gas research in China and the internationalization of Chinese journals, China National Knowledge Infrastructure selected 35 representative excellent articles on shale oil/gas research in China, which were compiled and published in English. The book focuses on the integration of basic theories and methods related to shale oil/gas. The chapters cover reservoir geological evaluation, dynamic development progress, drilling technology application, and other core research aspects on shale gas reservoir. The book can be used as a reference for senior managers of petroleum enterprises, experts and scholars of oil/gas research institutions and colleges/universities, and library readers worldwide.

As the editor-in-chief, I believe this book will promote the development and international academic exchange of theories and technologies in petroleum geological exploration, oil/gas field development, and petroleum engineering. This book can be used as a reference for technicians and managers engaged in shale oil/gas exploration and development.
